Have you ever tasted Hong Kong snake soup? Evidently, there are some pretty good health benefits the locals claim that make it worth sucking it up and giving snake soup a go. Today we had the privilege to learn more about these benefits from Grace, who works at the She Wong Lam snake soup cafe in the trendy district of Sheung Wan. Grace told us that the soup is prepared, sold and consumed only during the winter months (November to March) to make the body warm.

Off season the snakes, which are farmed and even poisonous, are used for making snake wine. Snake gallbladders are used to make a wine that claims to improve eyesight, while snake penis’ are used to make a wine that claims to improve…you can guess. It’s the natural form of viagra.

Watch the scope to learn more about snake soup, what it tastes like, what it looks like and what goes into the recipe.

I understand that She Wong Lam has the best snake soup in town for the best value and largest portions. At only $55 (US$7) per bowl, it’s a great deal.

She Wong Lam was started by Lou Tai Lam over 130 years ago and is still operating year round. Stop in for a bowl of tasty soup and soak in the old world atmosphere.
